Year 11 excelled themselves last term when they participated in mock interviews with local employers. The event was once again arranged in conjunction with our partners Careers Wales. Employers and providers included: Careers Wales, Bridgend County Borough Council, The Fire Service, Lloyds Bank (our school business partners), Cardiff and Vale College and a range of STEM ambassadors. Prior to the event, students were asked to complete an application form similar to one they might fill in in preparation for interview. Many thanks to year 11 Form Tutors and Eva Cornwall (Careers Advisor) for assisting our pupils with this. Huw Jones (our business partner from Lloyds Bank) also came in to do an assembly he gave advice on employability skills and interview techniques.

On the day, students were given an allotted time to attend the interview and I am pleased to say that attendance was extremely high. Students arrived punctually and conducted themselves extremely well. The employers asked them questions about: themselves, their skills, strengths, qualifications, their future education goals, work experience and career aspirations. At the end of the interview, the employers provided the students with detailed written and verbal feedback.

The providers and employers gave glowing feedback on the performance of our students. They highlighted the fact that they would be happy to employ a number of individuals at this point in time. They were pleased with how the pupils reacted to the experience and expressed that they “thoroughly enjoyed working with them”. They also felt that the majority of students had a clear idea about what career path they wanted to follow in the future, which reflects that the career’s interventions that have been put in place for them this year have been helpful.

Although nervous at the outset, the students themselves felt that the experience was “very worthwhile” and they felt a “sense of pride” as they left the room. Many thanks to Mrs Alyson Casling, Careers Wales, our business partners (Lloyds Bank) and all of the employers and providers that assisted us on the day.
