The Nuffield Foundation supports work experience for Year 12 students who are studying Science (including Psychology), Technology, Engineering and Maths at A Level. Placements are available in universities, commercial companies, voluntary organisations and research institutions. Only 86 placements were awarded across the whole of Wales and Brynteg students: Michalina Fabian, Megan Hamilton, Isabella Jarvisto and Bethan Lewis successfully undertook four of these unique research opportunities. The students attended a Celebration Evening at Techniquest and were presented with their certificates by Nobel Prize Winner Professor Sir Martin Evans.

Megan Hamilton I completed my project in the University of South Wales where I conducted a Mathematics project on Network Analysis and Shortest Path Algorithms. I created a shortest path network between the closest stars to our solar system using various algorithms I coded using VBA, MATLAB and others. The Nuffield placement allowed me to work on problem solving and to develop my skills in Maths and was a very valuable aspect of my UCAS application. It also allowed me to enter into the Big Bang Science Fair, to send my project to Young Scientists Journey to hopefully be published and gain a Gold Crest Award which are achievements I can use when applying to university and jobs in the future.

Bethan Lewis During the summer I completed a four week placement for Biomedicine in the Modern World at Swansea University. By doing this placement I learnt about what scientific research is and how to become a researcher. Also, I spent a few days with charities such as Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation and observed their current research. This placement has helped me decide what course I would like to do in university and it will help in my future as I now have experience in a research laboratory. I was very fortunate to have this opportunity and I am very grateful to Mr Price for recommending this to me and helping me with the application process.

Michalina Fabian My 4 week Nuffield placement at Cardiff University Psychology Department was an amazing experience which helped me develop my essay writing skills, time management and my critical thinking skills. My research consisted of reading and summarising academic journals and creating a report on the work/ life balance of nurses around the world, as well as an academic poster.
