On 24th May, former head and deputy head boy Daniel Butlin and Benjamin Leonard set off for Buckingham Palace to receive their Duke of Edinburgh Gold awards. They are two members of the first group in Brynteg to receive the prestigious award, after years of volunteering, acquiring new skills and wild camping.

Under clear blue skies on the hottest day of the year, they received their awards from Olympic gold medallist and Brynteg alumna Nicole Cooke MBE. In 2008, Nicole became the first cyclist in history to win the Olympic and World Championship road races in the same year.

They then met Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

Once the formalities were over, the party were able to wander through Buckingham Palace gardens and mix with the other guests and celebrity presenters. The boys met comedian Ed Byrne, and Countdown presenter Susie Dent. The highlight of Mr Brown’s day was meeting Una Healy from the Saturdays.

The remainder of the group will receive their awards later in the year.
